How long will it take for my website to appear in the search engine listings?
It is mostly dependent on what your product or service is. Of course, a particularly competitive market is probably going to require more time and effort than one that has little competition. Each case is likely to present its own unique challenges; however, it is possible to see results within a few days, or it could take up to a few weeks to reach page one.
Why do web pages need to be optimised? (SEO)
Of the millions of people who use the internet daily, over 70% of them are searching goods and services to purchase. At least half of these customers will use some type of search engine to find what they want. Because of the enormous magnitude of the internet marketplace, there is a lot of competition among service providers and merchants. The problem is to get customers to see your product first. Studies have shown that most internet-purchasers are most likely to buy from a link found on the first page of search results. Only about 20% of visitors ever even make it to the second page. Obviously, if you have something to sell, the first page is where you want it listed. SEO is simply the quickest, least expensive, and most effective method for getting you there.
Should I Pay for Site Submission?
If you do a quick search on "SEO Consultants", you'll most likely see this kind of ad:
"We will submit your site to all 1500 search engines and guarantee you 14,000 hits on your first day for only £29.95!"
Why not use one of those? Well, don't be fooled. First of all, what 1500 search engines are they talking about? There are maybe 10-20, at the most, that are out there, and out of those, you only need to submit your site to maybe eight (and even that's a bit over the top).
Secondly, NO ONE can guarantee you that many hits. Just won't happen. You will not get that kind of traffic and especially won't get it on your first day. There are sites out there that get that many hits, but they are usually well-established, large sites that have been around for a while and have extremely deep content. Anyone who promises you this kind of result is trying to pull a fast one.
What is the most used search engine?
Google is by far the most used search engine. It provides search results not only on it's home page, but powers other search engines' results as well. Google claims to have indexed over 3 billion pages, but in reality, that number is probably too small. More than 300 million searches a day filter through Google's servers.
What are Meta Keywords?
The meta keywords tag allows you to provide additional text for crawler-based search engines to index along with the rest of what you've written on your site.
Good meta tags can help search engines list your site under the correct headings for your product or service.
Can you guarantee a top ten listing in Google?
Many SEO companies (who use Google Adwords) will make ridiculous statements like "Guaranteed number 1 position in Google or Guaranteed first page" knowing it's not likely to happen. Google says they do NOT form any 'special relationships' with any SEO company, these companies use lots of tricks in order for you to believe them.
For example, if your site is in the top one hundred listed, they will guarantee to get you onto page 1 within a week.
How do they do this?
Easy, just change the number of results in the search settings to show 100
results per page & you're now on page 1.
What are natural organic search listings?
Organic search results are listings on search engine results pages that appear because of their relevance to the search terms, as opposed to their being adverts. In contrast, non-organic search results may include pay per click advertising
Why is a sitemap important?
The Google sitemap program is a result of Google's constant efforts as a powerful search engine to provide users with better search results. It is believed that Google's regular crawl does not manage to discover all the pages available on the Web. Moreover, the Google Sitemap service helps Google to find out whether there are added, changed or updated pages. Now it is much easier to get a better picture of all the possible URLs in a website as well as the changes that are made using the Google Sitemap.
What if I don't want all my website pages indexed?
Web sites use the robots.txt file to give instructions about the site to robots telling them what they are allowed to crawl.
If you have certain pages or files that you would rather not be crawled or indexed, then the robots.txt file can be written to meet your requirements.
